Joseph Wayne Jackson, 44, pled guilty to 10 counts of failure to register for the sex offender registry and one count of probation violation in Amelia circuit court on Friday (Dec. 16).
Amelia Commonwealth’s Attorney Lee Harrison related Mr. Jackson had a lengthy criminal history and had not reported to the Virginia State Police as required by his sexual offense conviction 10 times. He had finally been located; then let out of jail on bond and “promptly disappeared again,” Mr. Harrison said, adding it would have been difficult for him to plead “not guilty” with all that paperwork as proof.
Defense attorney Benjamin Spence countered Mr. Jackson had accepted responsibility and pled guilty. He noted his client had no new criminal convictions and had been sentenced to a year in prison for probation violation in Cumberland County.
Mr. Jackson told Judge Paul W. Cella he accepted responsibility for his actions.
Judge Cella sentenced him to five years in prison on each of the 10 counts of failure to register and suspended 49. Mr. Jackson will be on supervised probation for three years and on good behavior for five.
On the probation violation Judge Cella revoked one year and three months of the previously suspended time with the same supervised probation and good behavior requirements.
