Hammock’s charges dismissed

Jeffrey Lynn Hammock, 56, had the Sept. 2, 2021 charges of shooting inside a building and domestic assault and battery dismissed in Amelia circuit court Friday (May 20).

Amelia Commonwealth’s Attorney Lee Harrison said the incident was more like reckless handling of a firearm and the shot only put a hole in the ceiling. Mr. Hammock was not taking his medications which added to his actions in the incident. The victim did not want the case prosecuted because of that as well.

Mr. Hammock had since taken an anger manangement class and a firearms safety course and his doctor had adjusted his medications. The victim told Mr. Harrison Mr. Hammock had done everything asked of him and Mr. Harrison asked the charges be dismissed.

Defense attorney Glen Henkle said his client was not opposed to having the charges dismissed, observing the firearm had been discharged “accidentally” because of the medications issue.

Judge Paul W. Cella granted Mr. Harrison’s request and dismissed both charges.
